I got a brand new Sony Ericsson a few weeks ago, and thought I’d write a review of it now that I’ve been using it for a while.

So, Read on to hear my thoughts of this exciting phone.

I was pretty excited when I came home from work with this beauty in my bag. For those of you who don’t know, I work at an electronic grocerist called Elkjøp, so therefore I got a pretty hefty rebate on the phone. Of course, the phone was still in the box, so I new nothing about the size of it. I had only seen it on posters and I thought it looked really oversized on them, so I was really surprised when i got this tiny little box.

After unboxing, my first impression was very good, mostly because of the thin and elegant look. After I charged it up and started using it, I wasn’t disappointed by the rest either.

The most important stuff

When I buy a phone, the things that matter the most for me, is battery life and screen size and quality. I read some reviews on the phone before I bought it, and they were all very impressed by the battery life. I was too. I’ve been using the phone for two weeks now, with a daily dialling-average of about 15-20 minutes, and I haven’t had to charge it untill today.

Over to the screen, that was just as I had thought it would be. Definately large enough, good color quality and contrast.

Navigation

I’ve had a W800i for over a year now, and I really like the navigation “stick.” I was a bit in doubt since SE has moved away from that on their new models. After using the phone, I found I had no problem using the navigation buttons on the W580i. It was actually quite comfortable. Also, I’ve always found the menu system on the SEs a lot easier to learn and logical than the one on the Nokias.

Also, the navigation wheel is backlit, which is insanely cool. Unfortunately, it does not change color as the lights on the sides does. That is another completely useless, but incredibly cool feature. They actually sync color changes with one of the themes! The first time I noticed that, I sat in my coach, staring at it changing for about a quarter.

The features

The W580i has some pretty nifty features, like the training app and the shake Walkman™ controll. Shortly said, they both work just as expected. The training app is nice, and gathers some nice info about you training session, but since I’m not obsessed with numbers and stats, I don’t use it. I work out to get visual results XD.

The other thing I mentioned, works as follows: You open up the Walkman app, start playing a song, then just shake the phone to have it play a random song from the current playlist. I’ve heard some people are having problems with this function, but it at least works flawlessly for me, and it’s really übercool.

As you can see, the phone is just a tad thicker than my Wacom Graphire4

Finishing notes

At the end of this review, I’ll try to sum up what I’ve written so far. First of all, the only negative thing I have to say about the phone is the fact that the camera doesn’t have zoom in image mode, while it has in video mode. So, apart from that, there’s only positive things about it in my opinion. It’s elegant, thin, loads of light, loads of features and much more at a very competitive price.
